Splash Media University gave a free webinar yesterday which I attended. They talked about the most effective ways to use Social Media for Marketing. This is a great way to get a basic understanding of how to use social media marketing. Once you understand the basics, you can start to make marketing decisions and I think you will be surprised at how many great ideas you will come up with for your company or yourself.

A well-crafted press release will secure a spot in the media much sooner than floating news around via social media and word-of-mouth. A press release goes directly to the news source who is in the business of finding newsworthy stories to produce. When a news source receives a completely thorough and concise press release, it minimizes the work they need to do on their end. If it is ready to publish, it will more likely be used.

A new study from a group called Text 100 in the United Kingdom compares the various ways the traditional news sources receive their information. From the 72 media personnel they interviewed, they learned that social media is consulted 2.6 times when a news story is being researched. They still rely heavily on press releases. A current example is a client that called just over a week ago. They wanted to increase their views on a YouTube video that they had already posted. From the time of their first call nine days ago, we have more than quadrupled the number of views on their video. We used a press release to secure an interview with the local television station combined with Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. And we are not done yet!

Our new client has written a song that her husband sings in this video. My friend, Jamie Glaser (amazing guitarist with Jean Luc Ponty reunion tour) introduced us to each other via email and phone. Thank you, Jamie! It has worked out well since she asked for Expressive Communications to get an increase of views on this video, which is posted on YouTube.

When we first started our unique strategy for her at the end of last week, there were 464 views. Over the weekend we did nothing. Now there are 1948 views, just a few working days later. She is grateful that our strategies have been so successful. There was even a spot on the local 10 o’clock news with them and clips from the video! How fun is that?

Measuring the ROI on social media must be done by more than looking at the increased sales and revenue. Social media helps to build and maintain your brand identity. It helps to instill and create the perception of who you are and what you are offering. It is like laying the ground work for recognition for your products and services. I will share with you an analogy.

In life, people get to know you and what you do. They learn this by what they see from you and what they hear from others. Social media works the same way. By placing information about yourself (or your company) out there on several different social media locations, you are building your reputation.. Then you are a part of a certain industry or a certain genre. You are who you are, built by the perception and reputation you put out there.
